HD DVD vs. Blu-ray Clash Continues

January 12, 2007

Laster wrote an interesting opinion on the HD DVD vs. Blu-ray war:

HD DVD vs Blu-raySince the release of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, people have been wondering which format will come out the victor. Well recent news has shown there might be a winner, at least to the porn industry.
Porn is in favor of HD-DVD over Blu-Ray…Why you ask?

Read this article.
And now this one.

Both of those stories seem to indicate that HD-DVD is the clear winner because the porn industry has chosen them to release their films.
Apparently Sony will not allow porn to be sold on Blu-Ray discs. To me, and I’m sure many of you will agree, this is a terrible move on Sony’s part. Porn is a huge market, especially on home video. This will surely come back to hurt the person at Sony that made this decision.

Next to the porn industry, two major Hollywood studios (Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros.) announced non-exclusive agreements to support HD DVD. Since that time, Paramount and Warner have chosen to release titles in both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD, while Universal Studios, The Weinstein Company, HBO and New Line Cinema have announced exclusive support for HD DVD. New Line has not released movies in either format yet but since it is owned by Warner it is expected to follow the parent company’s lead. So far it has announced to support HD DVD.

The big advantage Blu-ray has is that it’s the PS3 medium. There’s no doubt PS3 will become popular, so Blu-ray will never really lose the war. It also has far more storage capability. On the other hand, HD DVD has exclusive support from several major Hollywood studios, and now also from the porn industry. This way HD DVD is also certain of survival. It seems to me that this clash will end up without a winner, and both formats will exist next to one-another.
